Good afternoon.

A very interesting week.  As the Greystone Y parents know, Monday was...well...challenging.  So, Wednesday and Thursday classes were different and fun.

  • Wednesday 4-5pm GSY  -  we whacked bags, practicing sparring techniques.  Punching and kicking bags is always fun.
  • Wednesday 6:30-7:45pm MAIN  -  silent class.  I've had this in the back of my mind for years, we finally did it.  After discussing how we would communicate, we conducted class silently.  No verbal instruction.  Nice job Jack R. on running silent sparring matches!
  • Thursday 6:30-7:30pm GSY  -  Scott P. continued his excellent Rolls & Falls classes.  Everyone is beginning to get the hang of them.  For something different, I combined rolls, falls, the "Multi Bag Attack" January Fitness Challenge, pushups and crunches, into a timed contest.  Congratulations:
    • 1st place Richard Chinery, 1min:18sec
    • 2nd place Seth P., 1min:25sec
    • 3rd place Bryan Hix, 1min:26sec  (sore for two days)

Take a look at our WTSDA Region 6 philanthropic 'fun'raiser, the Pop Tab Tournament!  This is a fun competition with winning dojangs announced at this year's Region 6 Tournament.  Basically, we collect aluminum pop tabs off cans and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama converts them to money through recycling.  This charity provides a free place for families who have a seriously ill child at Children's Hospital downtown.  Let's everyone begin collecting those pop tabs!

Rank Exams

Our next rank exam is scheduled for the week of 2/26 - 3/1/2018 in classes.  Invitations will go out this week to eligible students.  Several 6th Gup students (green belts) are working on a difficult hyung (form) for their next exam.  I've spoken with each one about possibly needing a little more time to practice, and I will handle their exam a couple weeks later.  If needed.

Class Email - MLK, Upcoming Clinics

Good afternoon, everyone!

We had a very good week of classes.  I'm seeing some students begin to show next-rank techniques; that's how I know they're getting close to their next exam.  And how I know they're learning!  After evaluating time in classes, and technique and effort, I'll begin contacting students/parents about their next exam, to be held the beginning of March.

For any students with issues, we'll individually talk about what needs improving and come up with a plan together.  After all, this is their journey.  I'm just honored and grateful to be a part of it.

Birmingham YMCA's Closed Monday, 1/15/2018   (Tomorrow)

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr Day, the Greystone YMCA will be closed.  No Tang Soo Do class; we'll resume Tuesday night.

Class Enrollment Update

Most Enrollment Forms have been turned in.  Thank You! If you haven't yet, please take a moment and get that done.  It helps the Greystone Y and George Becker stay current on your information.  And good communication (like these updates) helps eliminate mistakes.

Please take a moment and fill it out.  It's good for everyone.

Attached is the 2018 GS Y Martial Arts Enrollment Form.  As explained in the GS Y email to everyone, there are price increases in all YMCA programs.  This includes an information update, so everyone needs to fill out the Enrollment Form.  Link below:

What:     WTSDA Region 6 - 2017 Fall Tournamenttsdlogo

When:     Yesterday, 9/9/2017

Where:    Lee High School, Huntsville, AL.  Hosted by Rocket City Tang Soo Do, Master Ola Miszka

From almost all information I've received, yesterday's tournament was a huge success.  Congratulations to everyone who competed.  It takes guts to prepare weeks ahead of time in order to perform in front of strangers.  My goal is for all competitors to walk away from their performances feeling they did their best.  My job is to help all competitors evaluate whether they met their goals, and to figure out how to set and meet them next time.

Congratulations to everyone who medaled.  Tournaments are fun games and it feels good to stand on the podium with three other peers and yell "TANG SOO!"

I'd like all competitors (or parents) to reply to this email with your tournament results and a photo or two.  Medal or no medal.  I'll compile results for a tournament email in the near future.

I'd also like to see all video.  Either send a link to your video, or upload to this link:

Martial artists, parents, thank you all for being an important part of Life Martial Arts Center.  Tang Soo!

Transformation Young Warrior 1 webSitting in a rocking chair, I’m watching several hundred TSD students, instructors, and masters warm back up from an hour long lunch break. They’re getting ready to go into the hour-long afternoon sessions of their choice. My boy, an orange belt, is reaching for the clouds by choosing Whip Staff with Mr. Dale and Staff Techniques with Mr. Best. I mean that by he is the lowest belt in each session.

Master McCarty Photo web

This is the first article in a series shared by Master McCarty on his history in martial arts, and in the World Tang Soo Do Association.

While at the Elberta Clinic, Mr. Bryan Hix approached me about writing a series of my history in Tang Soo Do. At first I really didn’t want to take the time to do this. But after some encouragement from a couple of my Black Belts I decided to give it a whirl.
