Grandmaster Shin was a lifelong learner, earning undergraduate and masters degrees, reading voraciously and writing six books. He believed deeply in students' developing their intellect as part of their Tang Soo Do training, so he encouraged each region to establish a college scholarship program.

This Scholarship Auction supports our Region 6 program.

training while in college Ms Lawrence WEBUnfortunately, training in martial arts is a hobby for most of us. We are not able to quit our day jobs to become professional martial arts instructors, as much as we might like to. Therefore, martial arts may take a backseat to other daily life things; it is also not uncommon for people to quit training because they get so busy with other things. I am a full time pre-med college student and am still continuing to train while in school.

It's A Long Season

worn baseball 1314396 640x480 WEBI never used to be a baseball fan. The number of games played per week boggled my mind and I could never keep up. Nor did I understand the lingo well enough to follow along (still not completely sure what a “balk” is). To top it off, it seemed like such a slow-paced game. So, yeah, I’d check scores every so often to see if my favorite teams were winning or losing. But beyond that, I couldn’t focus on the day-to-day schedules of the season. Soon I’d lose interest, and eventually just wait for football season to start.

That’s all changed in recent years, and now I understand the game better.

Class Email - Greetings From New Orleans

Good morning, everyone.  I hope all are well.

Another Black Belt clinic is in the books.  It’s interesting to feel these clinics, and the region’s growth, evolving in a positive way.  I believe the same is happening in our school.  I’m doing some different things, or at least some of the same things a little differently.  And a big shout-out to Seth Porter; your help with this,  and your support in LMAC, is invaluable!

With that said, I’d like to do two things.  One is to invite back our students who are not training with us right now.  Martial arts training offers a lifetime learning opportunity (you can’t get to it all in just one!)  And the benefits of strong, positive, committed training also last a lifetime.

I personally invite you back to our martial arts family so you may continue to experience the benefits our training offers.

Second, I ask all students and families to refer our school to your friends who will benefit from your same experience.  Pass on my phone number or email address, or just invite them to a class.  Let me know how I may help you with this.

By referring your friends,  you will personally be responsible for introducing them to a lifetime of learning and growth.

For some students, rank exams will be in two weeks.  And the Spring 2018 All-Ranks Clinic is in April, in Huntsville.  Online registration for that will open soon.

Rank Exams

Our next rank exam is the week of 3/5 - 3/8/2018 in classes.  Invitations and invoices have been emailed to eligible students.  The exam will be held in classes.  If your martial artist isn't testing they will still have class with testers.  If you have any questions reach out to me.

Good afternoon.

A very interesting week.  As the Greystone Y parents know, Monday was...well...challenging.  So, Wednesday and Thursday classes were different and fun.

  • Wednesday 4-5pm GSY  -  we whacked bags, practicing sparring techniques.  Punching and kicking bags is always fun.
  • Wednesday 6:30-7:45pm MAIN  -  silent class.  I've had this in the back of my mind for years, we finally did it.  After discussing how we would communicate, we conducted class silently.  No verbal instruction.  Nice job Jack R. on running silent sparring matches!
  • Thursday 6:30-7:30pm GSY  -  Scott P. continued his excellent Rolls & Falls classes.  Everyone is beginning to get the hang of them.  For something different, I combined rolls, falls, the "Multi Bag Attack" January Fitness Challenge, pushups and crunches, into a timed contest.  Congratulations:
    • 1st place Richard Chinery, 1min:18sec
    • 2nd place Seth P., 1min:25sec
    • 3rd place Bryan Hix, 1min:26sec  (sore for two days)

Take a look at our WTSDA Region 6 philanthropic 'fun'raiser, the Pop Tab Tournament!  This is a fun competition with winning dojangs announced at this year's Region 6 Tournament.  Basically, we collect aluminum pop tabs off cans and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama converts them to money through recycling.  This charity provides a free place for families who have a seriously ill child at Children's Hospital downtown.  Let's everyone begin collecting those pop tabs!

Rank Exams

Our next rank exam is scheduled for the week of 2/26 - 3/1/2018 in classes.  Invitations will go out this week to eligible students.  Several 6th Gup students (green belts) are working on a difficult hyung (form) for their next exam.  I've spoken with each one about possibly needing a little more time to practice, and I will handle their exam a couple weeks later.  If needed.

Class Email - MLK, Upcoming Clinics

Good afternoon, everyone!

We had a very good week of classes.  I'm seeing some students begin to show next-rank techniques; that's how I know they're getting close to their next exam.  And how I know they're learning!  After evaluating time in classes, and technique and effort, I'll begin contacting students/parents about their next exam, to be held the beginning of March.

For any students with issues, we'll individually talk about what needs improving and come up with a plan together.  After all, this is their journey.  I'm just honored and grateful to be a part of it.

Class Enrollment Update

Most Enrollment Forms have been turned in.  Thank You! If you haven't yet, please take a moment and get that done.  It helps the Greystone Y and George Becker stay current on your information.  And good communication (like these updates) helps eliminate mistakes.

Please take a moment and fill it out.  It's good for everyone.

Attached is the 2018 GS Y Martial Arts Enrollment Form.  As explained in the GS Y email to everyone, there are price increases in all YMCA programs.  This includes an information update, so everyone needs to fill out the Enrollment Form.  Link below:
